So, I don't normally get on the writing bandwagon this fast, but I was chatting with Lark last night, and she was all "I bet I can get Myshuno before you!" Which, y'all must understand, is a sucker bet :P But she hadn't done it when I got up this morning so I spent a couple minutes wavering before going "...screw it, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED."

(She beat me anyway, but I still wrote up more than one prompt.)

Here's the first one :P

Title: Good Help
Prompt: Grey’s first day of school in Sierra Plains
Universe: A Villainous Apocalypse
Word Count: 680
Rating: PG (for language only)
Summary: Saxon does his cousin a favor
Notes: This is canon, probably not going in a future chapter. Grey and her parents live in Sim City, so college is the first time she goes to class anywhere near Sierra Plains.

"Just a little more to the left...a little further...liiiiittle more, maybe an inch or so...perfect!"

Saxon let down his end of the bedframe with a grunt and straightened, brushing off his hands. "Did you decide on SPU just to torment me?" he asked, aiming for casual to hide his disgruntled mood.

With perfect unconcern, his cousin Grey grinned. "I wouldn't say torment, Saxon, why do you have to be such a drama queen?"

"Yeah, come on, man," his other cousin Dakota chimed in. "If she was trying to torment us we wouldn't be getting free food out of it!"

He shook his head. He did have better things to do than make himself a slave to Grey Doran's idea of feng shui, but he couldn't honestly say he didn't want her there. She was the only one of his cousins he hadn't grown up with, and it was nice to be able to walk across the street if he wanted to visit her rather than take an hour-long taxi drive. "She's making us do manual labor for it, Dakota," he said dryly.

"You didn't have to say yes," said Grey dismissively. "Anyway, we just need the bookshelf and couch, and then you're done." She led them back out to the living room, which she shared with Felicity Pitts and Idina and Kristin Holm.

Saxon envied her that. He would much rather have shared a house with his cousins, even just with Dakota, than with his sister. Apparently there was some bullshit rule against it, however, so he was stuck by himself for a year before he got saddled with the Queen of Bitterness. At least he only had to sleep there and he could spend his hours out of class anywhere else he wanted. In fact, if he got lucky, his mother might even give in to Cassie's insistence that she didn't need to go to college.

"I still don't see what was wrong with the old couch and shelf," Idina called from the bathroom.

"What was wrong with them," Grey replied pleasantly, "was that the shelf was nothing more than a haphazard stack of bricks and leftover siding and that couch had seen too many jumping sessions. Did you seriously never notice that spring poking out of the cushion?"

"It had character!"

"Which is layman's terms for 'I'm lazy.'"

"Aren't you the charmer," Idina drawled. "Tell me how you really feel, Grey."

Saxon watched as a smirk filtered onto Grey's face, not unlike one Idina often wore herself. "Fine, you can have the old one back, but don't blame me if you and your girlfriend want it for a makeout session and one of you ends up in the emergency room because that spring stabbed you in the back."

"...thanks for the new couch!"

"Making your point with hypothetical makeouts?" Dakota whispered, clearly impressed. "Wow, you really know how to handle her."

Grey shrugged and smiled. "Some people are easy to read. I'm just happy to have housemates to share it with. Mom and Dad were really generous about giving me stuff for college."

Saxon rolled his eyes and cracked his knuckles. "Where do you want it?"

Grey pointed him to the spot and he and Dakota moved it there. After minimal adjustment, they repeated the process with the bookshelf. "Lovely," said Grey, with a broad grin. "You guys are the best."

"As long as you're still feeding us," said Saxon, fighting a smile, "because otherwise we're putting the shelf out on your porch when we leave."

She laughed. "A bargain's a bargain. What time do you guys have class?"

"Mine was this morning," Dakota said.

Saxon shrugged. "Two o' clock?"

"Mind if I walk in with you? My seminar's at three."

"Be my guest."

The smile that lit up her face at that surprised Saxon. It was pleasant, just like everything else about Grey, but it had a distinct feeling of relief to it, too. He didn't know what it meant, but it suddenly made him glad to be able to do whatever he could for her.

I'm not sorry if throwing various challenges your way gets us both to write. I mean come on a little healthy competition is a good thing.

Grey sounds like an interesting character. I look forward to seeing more of this generation.

Ahaha, it's a very effective motivation. I wrote at least 15K more words in July than I would have without it.

I'm excited to get to them! We'll see how that goes.

I like Grey!
*Stares at dorm room where "character" means we still haven't bought the correct lightbulbs for the second lamp and I have a towering stack of lab procedures on our bench.*
... Yeah, I'm lazy too, so I feel for Idina here. :D

Yeah, senior year thesis means living like a sim - having a fun bar so red that it looks like a cherry. :/

Ah, Lark's challenges. :P I beat her once, but she's quite good at beating us.

I'm glad everyone's getting along in college, and I hope Saxon and Cassie can learn to get along better later on.

Well, I beat her in November and I took ONE of the races in July :P but she puts up a tough fight for sure.

Hahahaha well, we'll see. Hooray family-wide bitterness!

Yay! It's fun to see Saxon and his cousins a YAs! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing these things happen in the legacy as well.

(and lol at accepting a bet from Lark)
